For two years, the Sympoietic Society art collective researched and experimented with waters, glaciers and local communities.
The project ICE * In Case of Emergency found its conclusion after three art residencies in Finland, Italy and Austria.
In collaboration with UNESCO Biosphärenpark Großes Walsertal and theWalserherbst festival, workshops, performances, bonfire talks, art and science lectures with experts took place at the Burgruine Blumenegg.
ICE finally culminated on September 9 with an Art Hike and Glacier Ceremony to honour the vanishing glacier of the Rote Wand and say farewell.
Ein Jahr lang erforschte und experimentierte das Kunstkollektiv Sympoietic Society mit Gewässern, Gletschern und lokalen Gemeinschaften.
Das Projekt ICE * In Case of Emergency fand seinen Abschluss nach drei Kunstresidenzen in Finnland, Italien und Österreich.
In Zusammenarbeit mit dem UNESCO Biosphärenpark Großes Walsertal und dem Walserherbst Festival fanden in der Burgruine Blumenegg Workshops, Performances, Lagerfeuergespräche, Kunst- und Wissenschaftsvorträge mit Expert*innen statt.
Am 9. September 2023 gipfelte ICE schließlich in einer Kunstwanderung und Gletscherzeremonie, um den schwindenden Gletscher der Roten Wand zu ehren und zu verabschieden.
Farewell / Abschied
On September 9, 2023, nature and humans came together to celebrate a farewell to the fellow Rote Wand glacier, a body of water, of movements, and memories. Inspired by the Doomsday Clock, we symbolically gather 90 seconds before 12 to reiterate the kinship with more-than-humans, ecosystems and landscapes. It’s about grief, not only to mourn, but also to renew a promise to protect those who are fragile, hope with courage, care within and beyond our species. The Sympoietic Society art collective brought testimonies, to celebrate new and ancestral relationships with the land, and to honor the dying Rote Wand glacier.
After a minute of silence, a eulogy was shared, a farewell written by the glaciologist Günther Groß taking on the Rote Wand glacier’s perspective. A testimony and encounter between a more-than-human and a human, a dedicated researcher and his adored glacier.
Am 9. September 2023, kamen Natur und Mensch zusammen, um den Abschied des Roten Wand Gletschers zu zelebrieren, eine Gestalt aus Wasser, Bewegung und voller Erinnerungen. Inspiriert von der Weltuntergangsuhr versammelten sich Menschen symbolisch 90 Sekunden vor 12, um unsere Verwandtschaft mit dem mehr-als-menschlichen, Ökosystemen und Landschaften zu bekräftigen. Es ging um das Trauern, aber nicht nur, sondern auch, um ein Versprechen zu erneuern, diejenigen zu schützen, die zerbrechlich sind, mit Mut zu hoffen und innerhalb und außerhalb unserer eigenen Art wertzuschätzen. Das Künstlerkollektiv Sympoietic Society legte ein Zeugnis ab, neue und uralte Beziehungen zum Land zu feiern und dem sterbenden Rote Wand Gletscher, die letzte Ehre zu erweisen.
Nach der Schweigeminute für den Rote Wand Gletscher wurde eine Abschiedsrede verlesen, eine Würdigung, die der Glaziologe Günther Groß aus der Sicht des Rote Wand Gletschers verfasst hat. Ein Zeugnis und Zusammentreffen jahrzehntelanger Freundschaft von Natur und Mensch, einem passionierten Forscher und seinen verehrten Gletscher.

The Rote Wand (2,704 m) is the second highest mountain in the Lechquellengebirge. It rises between Buchboden im UNESCO Biosphärenpark Großes Walsertal in the north and Dalaas in the Klostertal in the south. The name Rote Wand comes from the red Lias chalk, which is particularly noticeable on the south face, which is up to 400 m high. On the north side, the small Rote Wand glacier is embedded below the summit, which is one of the lowest (ca. 2,400 m) glaciers in the Northern Alps.
In the first Austrian glacier inventory with the glacier status of 1969, the Rote Wand glacier one of 925 Austrian glaciers and was given an international glacier number in the World Glacier Inventory. A4R014IL 1 with A for Austria, 4 for Europe, R014IL 1 for glaciers in the Ill-Rhine area.
Die Rote Wand ist mit einer Höhe von 2.704 m der zweithöchste Berg im Lechquellengebirge. Sie erhebt sich zwischen Buchboden im UNESCO Biosphärenpark Großes Walsertal im Norden und in Dalaas im Klostertal im Süden. Der Name Rote Wand stammt vom roten Liaskalk, der besonders auffällig in der bis zu 400 m hohen Südwand zu sehen ist. Nordseitig ist unterhalb des Gipfels der kleine Rote Wand Gletscher eingelagert, der zu den am niedrigsten (ca. 2.400 m) gelegenen Gletschern der Nordalpen gehört.
Beim ersten österreichischen Gletscherinventar mit dem Gletscherstand von 1969 war ich einer von 925 österreichischen Gletschern und bekam eine internationale Gletschernummer für das World Glacier Inventory. A4R014IL 1 mit A für Österreich, 4 für Europa, R014IL 1 für Gletscher im Ill-Rhein-Einzugsgebiet.
“On the eastern side of the Rote Wand peak, there is a hanging glacier with a surface area of 30 hectares that is flat at the top and then very steep. Although the higher parts are undoubtedly above the snow line, as the end cannot reach far below 2,400 m, it must be classified as a ravine glacier due to its location. Its direction is east in the upper part and northeast further down. On its southern right flank, it is accompanied throughout by high walls that gradually descend from 2,700 m to 2,400 m.”

My ancestors lived in paradise many thousands of years ago. Glaciers as far as the eye could see. I could see from my nunatak, as all the mountain peaks protruding from the ice were called, over the Lutz, Ill and Rhine glaciers across the ice to the area around Schaffhausen and Kempten. Today's researchers refer to this period as the High Glacial, which ended around 20,000 years ago and transitioned into the Late Glacial or Late Ice Age. This period brought a lot of variety, but I was always well-fed and usually sent the ice far out into the Lutz, often as far as the large lake that lay for a time at the end of the valley.
Meine Vorfahren lebten vor vielen Jahrtausenden im Paradies. Gletscher, soweit das Auge reichte. Ich konnte von meinem Nunatak, so nannte man alle aus dem Eis ragenden Bergspitzen, über den Lutzgletscher, Ill- und Rheingletscher übers Eis bis in die Gegend von Schaffhausen und Kempten. Die heutigen Forscher nennen diese Zeit das Hochglazial, das vor etwa 20.000 Jahren endete und in das Spätglazial oder die Späteiszeit überging. Diese Zeit brachte viel Abwechslung, aber ich war immer gut genährt und schickte das Eis meist bis weit in die Lutz hinaus, oft bis zum großen See, der eine Zeit lang am Talausgang lag.

However, I only became really awake and icy again about 4,000 years ago, as the Schladming glacier of the Dachstein, also a glacier of the Northern Limestone Alps, told me. They were able to date the humus inclusions in the karren, as the karst phenomena in the limestone are called, to this time. Since then, my body measurements have often fluctuated. In the Bronze Age, the Roman period and the High Middle Ages, I was slim and small, almost sickly.
So richtig wach und eisig wurde ich aber erst wieder vor etwa 4.000 Jahren, das hat mir der Schladminger Gletscher vom Dachstein, auch ein Gletscher der Nördlichen Kalkalpen, erzählt. Dort hat man die Humuseinschlüsse in den Karren, so nennt man die Karsterscheinungen im Kalkgestein auf diese Zeit datieren können. Seither schwanken meine Körpermaße oft. In der Bronzezeit, der Römerzeit und im Hochmittelalter war ich schlank und klein, fast kränklich.

I really bulked up and put on weight in the Hallstatt period, the Migration Period and above all in the Little Ice Age, the name given to the mostly cool centuries between 1250 and 1850. After the last heyday of our existence around 1850, nature lovers, alpinists and scientists began to take a closer look at us. I blushed and hid behind the Red Wall. In 1868, John Sholto Douglas visited us with a friend and two mountain guides. He really liked the Rote Wand, as he described me in the Austrian Alpine Association 1868 yearbook.
So richtig breit gemacht und zugelegt habe ich in der Hallstattzeit, der Völkerwanderungszeit und vor allem in der Kleinen Eiszeit, so nennt man die meist kühlen Jahrhunderte zwischen 1250 und 1850. Nach der letzten Blütezeit unseres Daseins um 1850 beschäftigten sich vermehrt Naturfreunde, Alpinisten und Wissenschaftler mit uns und haben uns so richtig unter die Lupe genommen. Ich bin rot geworden und habe mich hinter der Roten Wand versteckt. Im Jahre 1868 hat uns John Sholto Douglas mit einem Freund und zwei Bergführern besucht. Ihm hat die Rote Wand sehr gefallen, denn er beschrieb mich im Jahrbuch 1868 des Österreichischen Alpenvereins.

Towards the end of this epoch, around 12,000 years ago, I only got as far as Buchboden and left a mark under the Gasthaus Kreuz - researchers call this the Egesenmoraine. It then became warmer 11,500 years ago and soon after the beginning of this new epoch in the Earth's history, known as the post-glacial period or Holocene, I slowly melted away and, like the sleeping beauty, fell asleep and disappeared for a few millennia. But I couldn't sleep all the way through, for a few centuries in between I woke up again from time to time as a patch of firn.
Gegen Ende dieser Epoche, so vor gut 12.000 Jahren bin ich nur mehr bis Buchboden gekommen und habe unter dem Gasthaus Kreuz eine Markierung hinterlegt – Forscher nennen diese Egesen-Moräne. Es ist dann vor 11.500 Jahren wärmer geworden und bald nach Beginn dieser neuen Epoche der Erdgeschichte, die Nacheiszeit oder Holozän genannt wird, bin ich langsam abgeschmolzen und länger wie Dornröschen für einige Jahrtausende eingeschlafen und verschwunden. Aber so ganz durchschlafen konnte ich nicht, für ein paar Jahrhunderte bin ich dazwischen ab und zu wieder als Firnfleck aufgewacht.

In 1880, the geographer Eduard Richter, who taught at the University of Graz, described the glaciers of the Eastern Alps and included me among the Northern Limestone Alps. Eduard Richter was actually one of the initiators of the Alpine Association's glacier measurement service in 1891, but I was too small and so they left me alone. They would have discovered malnutrition in me much quicker than in the large glaciers in the Central Alps.
Im Jahre 1880 beschreibt der an der Universität Graz lehrende Geograph Eduard Richter, die Gletscher der Ostalpen, und hat unter den Nördlichen Kalkalpen auch mich berücksichtigt. Eduard Richter hat dann eigentlich auch den Gletschermessdienst des Alpenvereins 1891 mit veranlasst, aber ich war zu klein und somit hat man mich in Ruhe gelassen. Dabei hätte man bei mir viel schneller als bei den großen Gletschern in den Zentralalpen die Unterernährung festgestellt.

Since the end of the Little Ice Age around 1850, I have been getting worse and worse, apart from 1 to 2 decades before 1920 and before 1980. In the first Austrian glacier inventory with the glacier status of 1969, I was one of 925 Austrian glaciers and was given an international glacier number for the World Glacier Inventory. A4R014IL 1 with A for Austria, 4 for Europe, R014IL 1 for glaciers in the Ill-Rhine area. From time to time I also see cows, now even sheep and goats down on the Alps with such long numbers. Glacier researchers have continued to measure and describe and reconstruct the climate of past centuries and millennia, but have not realized for a long time that it has been going off the rails far too quickly for the past two to three decades. The Schladming glacier has told me that at least the cables and lifts are now being removed from its ice, but not out of piety and common sense, but for economic reasons, the glacier ski area is no longer profitable.
Seit dem Ende der Kleinen Eiszeit um 1850 ging es mir immer schlechter, abgesehen von 1 bis 2 Jahrzehnten vor 1920 und vor 1980. Beim ersten österreichischen Gletscherinventar mit dem Gletscherstand von 1969 war ich einer von 925 österreichischen Gletschern und bekam eine internationale Gletschernummer für das World Glacier Inventory. A4R014IL 1 mit A für Österreich, 4 für Europa, R014IL 1 für Gletscher im Ill-Rhein-Einzugsgebiet. Ab und zu sehe ich auch Kühe, mittlerweile sogar Schafe und Ziegen unten auf den Alpen mit so langen Nummern. Die Gletscherforscher haben weiterhin gemessen und beschrieben und das Klima vergangener Jahrhunderte und Jahrtausende rekonstruiert, aber lange nicht erkannt, dass es seit 2 bis 3 Jahrzehnten viel zu schnell aus den Fugen gerät. Der Schladminger Gletscher hat mir erzählt, dass man jetzt wenigstens die Verkabelungen und Lifte von seinem Eis abbaut, aber nicht aus Pietät und Vernunft, sondern aus marktwirtschaftlichen Gründen rentiert sich das Gletscherschigebiet nicht mehr.

In autumn 2023, the Sympoietic Society artist collective, in collaboration with the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Großes Walsertal and Walserherbst Festival, organized an art hike with a glacier ceremony to pay tribute to the existence of the dying glacier of the Rote Wand and to say goodbye. Accompanied by local mountain guides (Matthias Schuchter and Walser Guides) and volunteers, the glacier ceremony was held in a small circle directly on site at the high camp at 11:58:30 am, in the style of the Doomsday Clock. After an initial minute of mourning, a farewell speech by glaciologist Günther Groß was transmitted from the Rote Wand to the valley by radio. The Walser Guides mountain guides symbolically hoisted a shroud for the glacier, while the art collective scattered dust collected from glaciers in the Alps into the wind. The ceremony ended at the Rote Wand summit with the addition of a glacier register book to the existing summit book in order to continuously document the extinction of the glacier. At the same time, the participants were able to follow the glacier ceremony from the base camp on Alpe Klesenza via video and audio transmission, further performances were held, a small library with glacier literature was set up and a melting ice sculpture reminiscent of an ice core sample was presented.
Im Herbst 2023 veranstaltete das Sympoietic Society Künstlerkollektiv in Zusammenarbeit mit dem UNESCO Biosphärenpark Großes Walsertal und Walserherbst Festival eine Kunstwanderung mit Gletscherzeremonie, um die Existenz des aussterbenden Gletschers der Roten Wand zu würdigen und Abschied zu nehmen. In Begleitung von lokalen Bergführer*innen (Matthias Schuchter und Walser Guides) und freiwilligen Helfer*innen wurde die Gletscherzeremonie im kleinen Kreis direkt vor Ort im Höhenlager um 11:58:30 Uhr, in Anlehnung an die Weltuntergangsuhr, abgehalten. Nach einer initialen Trauerminute wurde eine Abschiedsrede von Glaziologe Günther Groß von der Roten Wand in das Tal mittels Funk übertragen. Die Walser Guides Bergführer*innen hissten symbolisch ein Grabtuch für den Gletscher, das Kunstkollektiv streute zusammengetragenen Staub von Gletschern aus den Alpen in den Wind. Die Zeremonie endete am Rote Wand Gipfel mit der Beigabe eines Gletscher-Registerbuchs zum bestehenden Gipfelbuch, um das Aussterben des Gletschers fortlaufend dokumentieren zu können. Gleichzeitig konnten die Teilnehmer*innen die Gletscher Zeremonie vom Basislager auf der Alpe Klesenza über Bild- und Tonübertragung aus verfolgen, weitere Performances wurden abgehalten, eine kleine Bibliothek mit Gletscher Literatur eingerichtet und eine schmelzende Eisskulptur, welche an eine Eiskern Probe erinnert, präsentiert.

GLACIER GHOSTS / GLETSCHERGEISTER | Workshop | 17:00 – 19:00
The participatory storytelling workshop focuses on environmental education and the imagination of the future generation of tomorrow. Children from and around the UNESCO Biosphärenpark Großes Walsertal are invited to listen to stories and folklore of glacier ghosts living in the habitats of bodies of water and glaciers.Drawings and short stories from Finland, Italy and Austria are brought to life in the form of textile sculptures in collaboration with regional tailor Claudia Ebster. The glacier ghosts sculptures and their short stories will be presented by storytellers.

Der partizipative Geschichtenworkshop konzentriert sich auf Umweltbildung und die Vorstellungskraft der Generation von Morgen. Kinder aus und rund um den UNESCO Biosphärenpark Großes Walsertal sind eingeladen, den Geschichten von Gletschergeistern in Gewässer und Gletscher zu lauschen.Zeichnungen und Geschichten aus Finnland, Italien und Österreich wurden in Zusammenarbeit mit der regionalen Schneiderin Claudia Ebster in Form von Textil Skulpturen zum Leben erweckt. Die Gletschergeister Skulpturen und ihre Geschichten werden von Geschichtenerzähler*Innen präsentiert.

FIRE TALK / LAGERFEUER GESCHICHTEN | Symposium | 19:00 – 21:00
The Fire Talk symposium gathers the international art collective, participants coming from and to the valley with a glaciologist around a bonfire. The intercultural character of fire creates a particularly collective atmosphere for knowledge transfer and poetic basis for ecological empathy. The event honours ancient rituals of belonging and social exchange, thus acts as a bridge between science and art to address the disappearance of glaciers.During the symposium interlocal bread will be baked and served with tea from local mountain herbs. The glaciologist shares knowledge about the fragile ecosystem of glaciers, and shares anecdotes from many years of experience in the Alps. Afterwards, the art collective experiments with different narratives including stories, poems and songs.

Das Fire Talk Symposium versammelt das internationale Kunstkollektiv, Teilnehmer*Innen aus und in das Tal kommend mit einem Glaziologen am Lagerfeuer. Der interkulturelle Charakter eines Lagerfeuers schafft eine besonders kollektive Atmosphäre zur Wissensvermittlung und poetische Basis für ökologische Empathie. Die Veranstaltung, die an althergebrachte Rituale der Zugehörigkeit und gesellschaftlichen Austauschs erinnert, fungiert somit als Brücke zwischen Wissenschaft und Kunst, um das Schmelzen und Schwinden von Gletschern zu thematisieren.
Während des Symposiums wird interlokales Brot gebacken und ein lokaler Bergkräutertee serviert. Der Glaziologe berichtet über das fragile Ökosystem von Gletschern und teilt dabei Anekdoten aus langjähriger Erfahrung als Gletscherforscher in den Alpen. MORNING SESSION #3 | Workshop | 09:30 – 10:30The Morning Sessions are a series of short events that take place each morning during the art residency. Each event is led by artists with a focus on our living environment and landscapes. At the end of each workshop, a simple breakfast is offered to all participants. This includes homemade bread from local waters, butter from the region, and jams produced by the collective throughout Europe.

Experts from various disciplines will discuss about environmental protection of glaciers and the potential of art, science and activism. As an introduction, excerpts from art projects and short films will be presented, followed by a discussion with the experts about the role of art and climate protection in a time of melting and disappearing glaciers.

Expert*innen unterschiedlichster Disziplinen diskutieren über Klimaschutzmaßnahmen und Gletscher sowie die Potentiale für einen radikalen Wandel in Kunst, Wissenschaft und Aktivismus. Zur Einführung werden Auszüge von Kunstprojekten und Kurzfilme präsentiert, um im Anschluss mit den Expert*innen über die Rolle der Kunst und des Klimaschutzes in einer Zeit des Schmelzen und Schwinden von Gletschern zu sprechen.

A deep immersion into an embodied movement practice as a possible way to connect to nature and humans. With a focus on the emotion of hope, participants are enabled to feel themselves as part of nature. In this communion of nature and humanity, a space for a hopeful future emerges.

Ein tiefes Eintauchen in eine verkörperte Bewegungspraxis als ein möglicher Weg zur Verbindung von Natur und Mensch. Mit einem Fokus auf die Emotion von Hoffnung, wird es den Teilnehmer*Innen ermöglicht es sich, sich selbst als Teil der Natur zu erleben. In dieser Gemeinschaft von Natur und Mensch entsteht ein Raum für eine hoffnungsvolle Zukunft.

Glacier Ceremony / Gletscherzeremonie
ICE finally culminated on September 9 in with a Art Hike and Glacier Ceremony to honor the vanishing glacier of the Rote Wand and say farewell.
The Glacier Ceremony was divided into a Base Camp and an Altitude Camp. Participants were invited to artistic interventions at the Base Camp on Alpe Klesenza from 10:30 a.m. and are connected to the Glacier Ceremony at the Altitude camp in community by means of image and sound transmission.
Am 9. September 2024 gipfelte ICE schließlich in einer Kunstwanderung und Gletscherzeremonie, um den schwindenden Gletscher der Roten Wand zu ehren und zu verabschieden.
Die Gletscherzeremonie teilte sich inhaltlich in ein Basislager und Höhenlager. Teilnehmer*innen wurden im Basislager auf der Alpe Klesenza ab 10:30 Uhr zu künstlerischen Interventionen eingeladen und mittels Bild- und Tonübertragung mit der Gletscherzeremonie im Höhenlager in Gemeinschaft verbunden.
The art collective was accompanied by the local Walser Guides and mountain guide Matthias Schuchter on the Art hike and hold the Glacier Ceremony at the Altitude Camp on a viewpoint on the Rote Wand glacier at 11:58:30.
Das Kunstkollektiv wurde von den lokalen Walser Guides und Bergführer Matthias Schuchter auf der Kunstwanderung begleitet, um eine Gletscherzeremonie im Höhenlager auf einem Aussichtspunkt auf den Rote Wand Gletscher um 11:58:30 Uhr abzuhalten.
The Glacier Ceremony was designed as a performative moment in the great outdoors, a moment of remembrance, appreciation and mourning for the more-than-human loss of glaciers, communally connected between Base Camp and Altitude Camp.
Die Gletscherzeremonie gestaltete sich als performativer Moment im großen Draußen, einem Moment des Gedenkens, der Würdigung und der Trauer über den mehr-als-menschlichen Verlust von Gletschern, gemeinschaftlich verbunden zwischen Basislager und Höhenlager.

“Filming this event was a profound experience to me. As someone who loves the outdoors, I've seen glaciers disappear firsthand. It's tough to grasp the scale of it all from our human perspective. These glaciers have been part of our world for ages, and now they're fading away, taking with them an entire ecosystem and cultural history. Observing the artists forming a connection with the more-than-human world was not just moving but also therapeutic, showing a new way to approach loss. I hope this documentary inspires hope and fosters fresh connections with our environment.”
“Die Dreharbeiten zu diesem Ereignis waren für mich eine tiefgreifende Erfahrung. Als jemand, der die Natur liebt, habe ich das Verschwinden von Gletschern aus erster Hand miterlebt. Es ist schwer, das Ausmaß des Ganzen aus unserer menschlichen Perspektive zu begreifen. Diese Gletscher sind seit Ewigkeiten Teil unserer Welt, und jetzt schwinden sie und nehmen ein ganzes Ökosystem und eine ganze Kulturgeschichte mit sich. Es war nicht nur bewegend, sondern auch therapeutisch, den Künstler*innen dabei zuzusehen, wie sie eine Verbindung mit der übermenschlichen Welt herstellen und einen neuen Weg aufzeigen, mit dem Verlust umzugehen. Ich hoffe, dass dieser Dokumentarfilm Hoffnung weckt und eine neue Verbindung zu unserer Umwelt herstellt.”
