The ICE * In Case of Emergency project acknowledges the melting of glaciers, rising sea levels, and the disappearance of winters around the globe as an urgent call to think beyond human-centred perspectives.

Moving from the critical state of the entangled multispecies world, Sympoietic Society researches local ecologies and a reconnection to the more-than-human world. ICE unfolded over two years from 2022 to 2024 as a series of artistic, cross-disciplinary research, and performative interventions, spreading across territories and borders in Finland, Italy, and Austria.

United by the presence of bodies of water directly affected by global warming, the three locations were the scene of hands-on workshops, embodied exercises, performances, dinners, and symposia.

Working with local communities, artists, scientists, glaciologists, mountaineers, and site-specific actors, ICE calls for a solid network to discuss environmental losses and act with disruptive initiatives.

Our inter-local research culminated on September 9 with a Art Hike and Glacier Ceremony, a day of mourning and healing for the vanishing Rote Wand glacier in Austria, advocating for resilience, practices of care and embodied connections to the Alpine lands.

Dear fellow human,

just as quickly this website disappears, more-than-human ecologies are disappearing. We call upon human actors from all parts of society to gradually but radically rethink our ways of living and thinking.
